The new £82 million railway station building in Coventry has opened, supporting the existing Grade II listed station. Adjacent to TWO FRIARGATE, the development improves the experience for commuters and visitors to Coventry and adds additional station capacity.
The development brings Coventry railway services – and the overall passenger experience – in line with the highest standards in the UK.
The new state-of-the-art facility is a key part of the area’s wider regeneration. This includes Friargate – an ambitious new business destination in Coventry. TWO FRIARGATE is currently under construction and is set to be the city’s premier office building, targeting BREEAM Excellent. This follows the successful delivery of One Friargate.
The new station building includes a multi-storey car park, retail units and access to all four of Coventry Station’s platforms. Furthermore, it offers a taxi loop and transport hub with a direct link to the station itself. There is also a secure cycle storage facility – including space for cargo bikes.
The popular railway station is a hub for travel in the Midlands and nationwide. London is under an hour away, access to Birmingham International Airport takes 10 minutes, whilst journeys to Birmingham city centre takes a mere 20 minutes. Local connectivity to Kenilworth, Leamington and other stations across the city remains quick and easy.
Councillor Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Regeneration and Climate Change said,
“Coventry Railway Station has long been a fantastic asset for the city, with fast and direct access to London and Birmingham, as well as a host of local connections. The opening of the new state-of-the-art station building will support predicted growth in passenger numbers over the coming decades.
“The connectivity the station offers helps underpin the success of the wider opportunity at Friargate, and will continue to be at the heart visitors to Coventry will continue to benefit from the enhanced capacity, connectivity, and quality of the welcome as part of this project.”
